Laptop Docking Stations Explained
Why laptop docking stations?
As laptops and notebooks become more powerful, the choice between a laptop and a desktop gets harder to make — especially as manufacturers strip traditional ports from newer, slimmer devices. A laptop docking station solves this dilemma, giving you the port availability of a desktop without giving up the portability of a laptop.
What is a laptop docking station?
A laptop docking station is a device with a range of ports and card slots that plugs into your laptop to add functionality your laptop's built-in ports don't cover.
What is a laptop docking station used for?
A docking station adds ports such as Ethernet, HDMI, DisplayPort, a 3.5mm audio jack, and SD card slots to a laptop. Common uses include:
- Creating a full desktop-style setup from a laptop
- Adding a hardwired Ethernet connection where only Wi-Fi is available
- Connecting a laptop to a projector for presentations
Why should I use a laptop docking station?
A larger display, full-sized keyboard, and mouse are hard to beat compared to a laptop's built-in screen and trackpad — but portability still matters for flexible and hybrid working. A docking station gives you both: plug in a single cable to access dual 4K monitors, a full-sized keyboard and mouse, an HD webcam, and Gigabit Ethernet, then unplug and take the laptop with you when you need to move.
Can any laptop use a docking station?
As long as your laptop, notebook, or tablet has a compatible operating system and the right ports, it can use a docking station.
For video output specifically, your device needs a USB-C port that supports DisplayPort Alternate Mode. You can usually identify this by a "D" or Thunderbolt symbol next to the port — though MacBooks and newer Dell laptops often don't label this, so you'll need to check your device's USB-C specification in system settings instead.
Most new USB-C laptops support DisplayPort Alt Mode. If you have a MacBook with an M1 chip or newer and want to run two or more external displays, you'll need a docking station that specifically supports MST for Mac.

Can my laptop use a USB-C docking station?
If your device has Thunderbolt 3, Thunderbolt 4, or USB-C with Power Delivery and DisplayPort Alt Mode, it's compatible with a USB-C docking station — letting you connect a full range of peripherals through a single cable.
What's the difference between a hub and a docking station?
Both add extra ports, but they differ in scope:
- A USB hub expands USB connectivity only — typically USB-A and USB-C ports
- A docking station offers a much wider range of connections, including video output, data transfer, charging, and Ethernet
Do I need to install a driver?
It depends on the docking station. Most LINDY docking stations are plug-and-play, with no driver installation required. Where a driver is needed, it's available as a quick download from the relevant product page on our website.
